Orienteering
Course

Waimate has three permanent orienteering courses set up in Knottingley Park and Arboretum.

The courses cover easy, moderate and difficult so there’s a course for everyone - bring the friends and whānau.

If you want to have a go - you’ve come to the right place.

Here you’ll find everything you need to get started, including course maps, instructions and answers (no peeking).

How it works

Orienteering is a great way to get fresh air, while giving your brain a workout at the same time.

It’s a fun way to explore Knottingley Park and Arboretum - using a map to find checkpoints hidden around the park.

It’s part adventure, part problem solving, and you can go at your own pace

Choose your course and download your map

Each map has instructions and the grid for recording your answers.

Use your map
Turn the map so it lines up with what’s around you. Use paths, trees and open spaces to guide your way. You can use a compass if you like.

Find the checkpoints
Look for orange and white markers around the park. Each one has a number and a letter code. Make sure the number matches your map, then note the code.

Finish
Visit each checkpoint in order, then return to the start.

Good to know

  • Walk, jog or run - your call

  • You can use a compass but it’s optional

  • Great for families, groups or solo

  • No booking needed

Knottingley Park and Arboretum

Just 2km from town, Knottingley Park and Arboretum is a peaceful 36-hectare park filled with mature exotic trees.

It has a campground with powered and non-powered sites (and it’s pet friendly), a playground and picnic area, and a flat loop track popular for walking, biking and dog walking. The park is also home to Waimate’s 18-basket disc golf course, and an orienteering course - both wind through the arboretum.

An equestrian cross-country course runs through the park and is managed by the Waimate Pony Club.

Dogs allowed off-leash, except in campgrounds/play areas
